The short answer

The urge to place a bet is strongest right now and fades if you don’t act on it. Put distance between you and the app or the money: step away from your phone, go for a walk, call someone, or write down what you’d lose. Urge Buddy is an iPhone app that gives you a 1 to 5 minute task the moment you tap it.

Make it harder to bet

The best moment to beat a gambling urge is before it hits. Many betting sites and app stores let you exclude yourself, and banks can block gambling payments on your card. Delete betting apps and log out of accounts.

What to do when you want to bet

  • Step away from the phone. Walk around the block without it.
  • Play it forward. Picture the next hour if you lose, not just the win.
  • Write down why. Three reasons you’re stopping.
  • Talk to someone. A text to a friend, or a helpline.

How Urge Buddy helps

  1. Tap your buddy the moment the urge hits. From the app, or say “I’m craving” to Siri, or set it on the Action Button.
  2. Say where you are and how you feel. At home, out but private, or out in public; stressed, anxious, bored, lonely or low.
  3. Do the task. Your buddy picks something that takes 1 to 5 minutes and fits the moment: no squats on the bus, something calming when you’re anxious.
  4. Say how you feel now. Better counts as an urge beaten, and that count only goes up, even if you slip.

In Urge Buddy, choose Gambling as your habit, and add what you used to spend a day to see the money you’ve kept. You can also lock betting apps at your morning and night check-ins until you check in.

Don’t act in the moment. Step away from your phone, do something else for a few minutes, and the urge eases. Block gambling sites and payments ahead of time so the next urge is easier.

Can an app help with gambling?

Urge Buddy helps in the moment: you tap your buddy for a 1 to 5 minute task when the urge hits. It also counts your days without gambling and the money you kept. For deeper support, call a gambling helpline.
